The Victoria Mansion in Portland, ME was built in 1860 by Ruggles Morse. The Victoria Mansion houses a beautiful four 6×6 panel skylight at the top of the grand staircase. The skylight however, was destroyed by the hurricane of 1938. Sixty years later Robin was handed a cardboard box containing a mere 40% of the original glass from the skylight.
“Part jigsaw puzzle, part detective work. Stained glass window restoration involves artists, chemists, draftsmen, computer experts, historians, restoration specialists and glass experts” Christine Ridout (Victorian Homes).
The Victoria Mansion involved one year of research and one year of fabrication, the end result was the unveiling of a sixty year mystery; the Victoria Mansion skylight.
